Travel backpacks

For travelling with one bag on your back: packs that open like a suitcase, from a full-size carry-on down to a small cabin bag. Chosen on long-term reviews, on what owners say after years of trips and on whether the maker repairs them.

Prices from shops in Czechia.

Most full-service airlines take a 55 × 40 × 23 cm cabin bag; low-cost ones often allow only 20 cm deep. Check your own airline’s size, and remember that a soft bag packed full gets deeper than its label says.

If you walk a lot

Each has a padded hip belt that takes the weight off your shoulders, so these are the ones for a long walk from the station to your room. If you’re unsure, we’d start here.

More suitcase than backpack

These pack like a small case, with more room or more order inside. Carried a short way they’re fine; on a long walk, the weight ends up on your shoulders.

Light, for low-cost flights

Both fit 55 × 40 × 20 cm, the strictest low-cost cabin size. They’re plain polyester with little structure, so they sag when half full.

Smaller bags

Around 30 litres holds a long weekend, or a week if you pack light. All but the Thule are 20 cm deep or less.
