Sleeping on the way
Wax and silicone plugs are done after a few nights; the reusable ones sit inside the ear and last for months. If snoring nearby still gets through, sleep earbuds with noise cancelling go further.

Small enough to sit flush in the ear, so you can lie on your side, and the alarm plays only for you. A charge lasts about seven and a half hours, not always enough for a long night.

Shutting out the noise
Over-ear headphones take more room in a bag. Earbuds go in a pocket, but how much they block depends on how well they sit in your ears, so try every tip size.

Testers find it the most comfortable pair for a whole long-haul flight, and its noise cancelling is among the best measured. Bose sells new ear pads for when the old ones wear out.

The longest battery life here: about 60 hours with noise cancelling. The battery can’t be replaced, though, and some owners report pairs that stopped switching on after about three years.

Coffee and water
On a plane, a plain bottle filled after security is usually enough. The insulated one is worth its extra weight on hot days.
