For keeping a phone and a laptop charged abroad, and knowing where your bag is. Chosen on measured tests and what people who travel a lot still carry years later.
For two or three nights away by train, car or a short flight: one bag that takes it all, and the few small things that make it easy. Chosen on independent tests, what owners report after years of trips and whether the maker repairs what wears out.
Prices from shops in Czechia.
If you fly, check the depth before anything else: many airlines take 23 cm in the cabin, the strictest low-cost ones only 20, and a soft bag swells as you fill it.
A duffel is one big space: quick to pack, and easy to push into a car boot or onto a luggage rack. It has no shape of its own, so a packing cube keeps things in order.

Light for how tough it is: some owners are still flying with theirs after ten years. It opens wide like a suitcase, and Patagonia repairs it in its own workshops in Europe.

The best of these duffels to carry on your back, with padded shoulder straps and a chest strap, and not a drop got in during a hose test. With no back panel, it sags when half full.

More structured than most duffels: its padded base keeps it upright while you pack, and the lid opens wide. The backpack straps are for short stretches, not long walks.

The lightest and least expensive duffel here: 600 g, and it rolls up small enough to take along empty. The fabric is thin: fine in light rain, no protection for a laptop.

The toughest bag here, in a thick coated fabric that lasts some owners fifteen years. At 32.5 cm deep it won’t go in the cabin, so it’s one for the car, the train or the hold.

At 18 cm deep, the only bag here that fits the 20 cm limit some low-cost airlines set. Its straps and hip belt tuck away when you’d rather carry it on the shoulder.

A waxed-canvas pack that owners call one of the sturdiest bags they have, after two years of daily use and flights. It’s heavy for its size, though: about 1.2 kg.

A wash bag of about 80 g that hangs on a door hook or a shower rail, keeping everything off a wet floor. It packs almost flat, but tips over unless it’s full.

One cube, two sides split by a wipeable wall: clean clothes come out of one as worn ones go into the other, so it stays the same size. The wall takes a little space.

Best of ten travel towels in one test: it held over three times its weight in water and dried outdoors in about 24 minutes. It’s microfibre, so it won’t feel like a hotel towel.

A litre bottle that weighs about 35 g and rolls up to the size of a fist when empty, so it takes no room until you need it. The narrow mouth makes it slow to clean.

Noise-cancelling earbuds whose case is also a small power bank: it gives a phone a little charge and props it up for a film. Pricier pairs block more engine drone.
